How to Remove Unfair Airbnb Reviews

A clear, step-by-step guide on how to dispute and remove unfair Airbnb reviews. Learn what qualifies for removal, how to build your case, and what to expect during the process.

Howdy Houstonians!

As hosts, we all know how crucial good reviews are for our listings. They build trust with potential guests, boost your ranking in search results, and often lead to more bookings at higher rates. Unfortunately, that also means a single bad review, regardless of whether it was unfair or biased, can scare off potential guests and hurt your bookings.

The good news? Some of these reviews can be removed. In this article, we’ll walk through Airbnb’s review removal process in a friendly step-by-step way. You’ll learn how the 14-day review window works, what counts as a policy violation, how to request removal, and how to make your case stronger.

Airbnb’s 14-Day Review Window

After each stay, both hosts and guests have 14 days to write a review. Airbnb designed this two-week window to encourage honest, balanced feedback without giving either party an unfair advantage. During this period, reviews are completed privately and aren’t seen by the other party until both reviews are submitted or the 14 days are up. While this system promotes fairness, it doesn’t completely protect from unfair or retaliatory reviews. Fortunately, Airbnb allows hosts to dispute reviews that violate its content policy.

What Kind of Reviews Can Be Removed?

First, it helps to understand Airbnb’s official review policy (read here). In a nutshell, Airbnb expects all reviews to be:

  • Unbiased: Reviews must reflect a genuine experience, not be used to punish or pressure. Guests can’t demand refunds in exchange for positive reviews or retaliate after rule enforcement.
  • Relevant: Reviews should focus on the actual stay. Airbnb may remove reviews from guests who never checked in, canceled for unrelated reasons, or complained about things outside your control.
  • Within Content Guidelines: Airbnb forbids content that is explicit, discriminatory, fraudulent, or harmful. Anything that violates their content policy strengthens your case.

The bottom line is that if a guest’s review violates these requirements, you must clearly show how the review violates Airbnb’s policy to get it removed. The more specific you are, the better.

How to Request a Review Removal

Before you file anything, gather your evidence. Airbnb won’t remove a review just because it feels unfair—you’ll need to show how it violates their policy. That means having clear documentation on hand, like screenshots of messages, a signed rental agreement, or timestamped photos. The stronger and more organized your evidence, the better your chances. Then you should:

  1. File an official review dispute – Use Airbnb’s review dispute form to submit your removal request. Include a short, professional explanation of how the review breaks Airbnb policy. Stick to the facts and clearly reference the part of the policy that was violated.
  2. Call Airbnb support – After submitting the form, reach out to Airbnb support via phone call. Let them know you’ve filed a dispute and briefly explain the policy issue. Support agents may escalate the case or ask for more information.

Remember to avoid using emotional language and instead use Airbnb’s preferred terms, such as “biased,” “irrelevant,” or “violates content guidelines,” to keep your argument clear and policy-focused. For example:
– “The guest brought a pet in violation of our rules, then falsely claimed we allowed it.”
– “Their review is retaliatory after we charged a fee for a rules violation.”

What Happens Next?

Once you submit your request, Airbnb will review it and may reach out for more details. If approved, the review will be removed and no longer affect your listing.

If your request is denied, you can still appeal. We’ve had success getting once-rejected reviews removed by following up with Airbnb support and clearly restating how the review violated policy. In one case, we sent a short message through the app, attached a bit more documentation, and pointed directly to the section of Airbnb’s review guidelines the comment violated. A few hours later, Airbnb reversed the decision and removed the review.
